I couldn’t help but feel excited when watching Sky News I learned that the US is planning a withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. The plan, thus far, is a draw down of 10,000 troops by the end of the year, and a further withdrawal of 23,000 troops by mid 2012.
That’s all very good. That is until you learn that the US currently has 100,000 troops in Afghanistan. Even with the draw down, Obama will still have doubled the occupation, as this figure from the New York Times demonstrates:
Not much of a withdrawal after all.
