In an update to what I posted yesterday, the ABC is reporting that 19 children, including 14 unaccompanied minors, will be sent to Malaysia as part of the first arrivals since the “Solution” was made official earlier this week. At this point I can only wonder how low Labor will go.
The article also says that many of the people on the boat come from Afghanistan. I feel this is an important point. By not processing these people the Government is effectively saying that they are not legitimate refugees, that their home nations are safe enough to live in. This is happening at the same time those within the Government and Military insist that Afghanistan is too unstable to withdraw troops.
I’ve only just seen the allegations made against Josh Woodard, bassist for hardcore band A Day To Remember. if you haven’t, you can see it here.
In brief; Woodard’s ex-girlfriend, Morgan Payne, claims that Woodard, as well as ADTR’s crew members, threw half full and broken beer bottles and Payne and her friends. When Payne took cover, Woodard is alleged to have confronted and verbally abused her. Woodard and one of ADTR’s techs are then accused of spitting in Payne’s face before leaving. As Payne left the area, it is claimed that another bottle was thrown, hitting Payne in the back.
Now obviously if any of these accusations are proven true they would constitute a series case of assault.
But what I wanted to focus on here is the disgusting attacks I have seen on Payne coming from people of Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr.
"Sometimes girls are just petty and need attention. thats what i believe all this is. I’ll never stop loving ADTR for stupid ex girlfriend drama.”
"This whole ‘scandal’ is shit, i call bullshit on all of it. Morgan is just a fame whore and is trying to get a spotlight over her from Josh, but in reality she looks like a fuckin idiot for doing something that everyone is gonna hate her on"
“STOP GIVING THIS BITCH THE ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!!”
"… that bitch better lay off and get a life”
“if you were a true fan to begin with and at any time LIKED THEM AT ALL. you wouldn’t be losing respect for them because of some dumb bitch looking for attention”
"Why is this dick giving [Josh Woodward] such a hard time? Don’t you have anything better to do? Get a life"
"…and how do you even know she’s telling the truth? Maybe she’s just a crazy ex that wants to ruin someones life. Can never tell with sluts"
"Not saying he did it, not saying he didn’t, but it seems fake as fuck to me"
"Or she could have not been a fucking dumb ass drama causing bitch and just walked away"
And so on and so forth.
Each of the comments assume that Payne can not be trusted; that she is a jealous liar. Now whilst Woodward is entitled to a presumption of innonence, shouldn’t that same right be extended to the woman at the centre of scandal? How is it right or fair that people can automatically assume that she is not to be trusted? There have been many comments accusing Payne of being promiscuous, or that she should have known to stay away from here ex, as if either of these points actually matter. The logical extension of these ideas is that a women must constantly seek the approval of her former partner before she can sleep with someone or even exist in his presence.
But of course, this is something we see all the time. Women, particularly (but definitely not limited to) those involved with men of fame and status, are constantly portrayed as inherently devious, scheming creatures. It is pure victim blaming, and it is sexist.
What I found particularly disturbing about those quotes is that they all, ALL, came from women. Not that I want to single out women, but just to show that sexist mentalities and myths are an ingrained part of Western culture.
But there is also a wider issue here. As I discussed yesterday, violence against women is endemic within society. It’s effects are long lasting, causing depression, anxiety and even suicide. Victim blaming only compounds these issues. It tell victims of gender violence that the outside world does not care for them. Even worse, it can indoctrinate victims with the belief that they are the reason for their pain.
So to those fans who are defending Woodward - before you go on with a misogynist rant (often accompanied by poor grammar) - stop and fucking think about how your words can cause real harm to those who have suffered enough. And whether you like it or not, that may include Morgan Payne.
Reads an article in today’s Sydney Morning Herald.
Some of the more disturbing statistics include
27% of Women have experienced gender based violence
8% have been raped
15% have experienced sexual assault
10% have been stalked
8% have been beaten by a partner
the median are for being raped is 13. Read that again, fucking 13!
Of women who had experienced three or more types of violence, 90% had experienced mental illness, substance abuse or post traumatic stress disorder, with 35% attempting suicide.
I remember years ago watching Eve Ensler, writer of The Vagina Monologues, describing the rates of gender-based violence in the US as constituting a war against women. Looking at this data, it’s hard not to agree that the war has spread to Australia.
Refugees - Youtube, Mandatory Detention and the Race to the Right
Australia’s Refugee policy hit a new low yesterday, with reports that the Government intends to film the deportation of new arrivals to Malaysia to produce videos that will be posted on Youtube. Whilst the Government insists this is part of a deterrent, under the guise of safety, I feel it is a part of an underlying barbaric and racist policy towards Asylum Seekers.
“……a slew of millionaire politicians who spent the last decade exploding the national debt with Endless War, a sprawling Surveillance State, and tax cuts for the rich are now imposing extreme suffering on the already-suffering ordinary citizenry, all at the direction of their plutocratic overlords, who are prospering more than ever and will sacrifice virtually nothing under this deal (despite their responsibility for the 2008 financial collapse that continues to spawn economic misery). And all of this will be justified by these politicians and their millionaire media mouthpieces with the obscenely deceitful slogans of “shared sacrifice” and “balanced debt reduction” — two of the most odiously Orwellian phrases since “Look Forward, not Backward” and “2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate””—Glenn Greenwald on the debt ceiling rise
